Description

Since 1831, The Bichot family has been at the forefront of Burgundy wines. Over the course of 6 generations, the house style has become more and more refined and distinct in elegance. With Albéric Bichot at the helm since 1996, the house has focused its future on quality, minimal intervention winemaking and organic farming. The embodiment of this approach resulted in their 6 domaines being fully organically certified since 2018, while receiving praise and awards on the quality of the wines.

Our Burgundy Chardonnay “Secret de Famille” is produced with vines located in Côte d’Or region only, around extremely well-located vineyards on the outskirts of the villages well-known for their white wines (St Aubin, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet…). We treat these wines as if they were white village from the Côte de Beaune where the yields are low of course, with perfectly appropriate ageing.

Soil – Calcareous clay

Grape Variety – 100% Chardonnay

Vatting – 50% in tanks 50% in barrels, Vatting time: 5 to 6 weeks

Ageing – 50% in tanks 50% in barrels, Ageing time: 8 to 12 months. Proportion of new barrels: 20%

The nose is dominated by hints of citrus and white flowers, and evolve in notes of honey and dried fruits. The mouth is very balanced, skillfully blending vivacity and roundness.

Food pairing – With a meal, this Burgundy Chardonnay “Secret de Famille” will use the charms of its aromatic palette on seafood, fish cooked in sauce or simply-prepared white meats.

Serve at 12°C. (54°F). Ideally should be drunk when in the full fruitiness of its youth or can be laid for a few years to enhance its more complex brioche hints.

Decanter – 92 points / TOP VALUE

Maison Bichot has produced this fine example of Bourgogne Cote d’Or with grapes sourced from Meursault, Puligny and Saint-Aubin. In 2019, low yields add extra concentration, with 35% of the blend aged in oak barrels for eight months (10% new) for extra depth while retaining crip acidity and crystalline fruit flavors. A whiff of struck-match reduction on the nose gives it more than a hint of village-level Puligny or Meursault – impressive for this newly created quality tier.

James Suckling – 90 points

An array of sources in the Côte de Beaune. This has a very impressive sense of smoothness and depth on the palate, delivering peach pastries and some gentle, nutty notes to close. Good value. Drink now.

Tim Atkin – 89 points
