Description

The Bibi Graetz winery was founded in 2000 on the hill of Fiesole, overlooking Florence, where Bibi, who grew up in a family of artists, fell completely in love with wine and made it his life.

Testamatta” – “crazy-head” in Italian – is the best word to describe Bibi Graetz: a positive, creative and passionate person. Testamatta wine expresses the purity, minerality and transparency of Sangiovese from old vines on the top of the hills characterized by soils rich of stones. A Supertuscan made with 100% Sangiovese, result of the combination of tradition and creativity.

  • Vincigliata, Olmo, Londa, Lamole, Montefili and Siena vineyards
  • 100% Sangiovese
  • 35-50 years old vines
  • Medium mixture soil rich of galestro and clay
  • Goblet and Guyot training
  • Natural fermentation in open top barrels
    6-8 manual punch-down per day
  • 20 months of aging

It is characterized by a deep ruby red color, and offers aromas of prune, dried flowers, porcini and cedar leading to a full body, with velvety tannins and lots of ripe fruit and milk chocolate. long and very soft, yet powerful.

James Suckling – 95 points

A silky and structured red with tiles, dark berries and lightly shaved chocolate. Full body, firm tannins and a persistent finish. Shows zest and liveliness.

Wine Spectator – 94 points

A good lashing of new oak provides toast and vanilla notes that augment the smoky black cherry and plum flavors in this red, which combines complexity, freshness and balance, with licorice, leather and tar chiming in on the firm finish.

Jancis Robinson – 17.5/20

Lovely aroma of sour cherry allied to a more savoury quality and also a touch of oak sweetness. Graetz has achieved that fine, dry tannic texture here that I only ever find where the vineyard has been allowed to speak. Again there is a touch of oak sweetness but the fruit shines – the palate is both scented and deep in fruit but without being a fruit bomb. It is a lovely wine but I can’t help thinking the price is this high because so little is made. But is is beautifully refined, aromatic and persistent. Clear Sangiovese character but Sangiovese that is showing terrific finesse. I have not tasted older vintages but this has the freshness and the harmony to have a long life if you can keep your hands off it as it gives so much scented pleasure already
