Description

Since 1831, The Bichot family has been at the forefront of Burgundy wines. Over the course of 6 generations, the house style has become more and more refined and distinct in elegance. With Albéric Bichot at the helm since 1996, the house has focused its future on quality, minimal intervention winemaking and organic farming. The embodiment of this approach resulted in their 6 domaines being fully organically certified since 2018, while receiving praise and awards on the quality of the wines.

Mercurey was named after the Roman temple built here to honour the god Mercury. With 650 ha (1606 acres), 85 “village” vineyards and 32 Premier Crus, Mercurey is the largest of the Co?te Chalonnaise’s appellations.
In 2005, Albert Bichot’s estates spread to the Chalonnaise slopes, with the creation of “Domaine Ade?lie” with more than 4 ha (9.8 acres) in the Mercurey appellation. This vineyard faces south. The wine’s finesse tempers all of the power this terroir could have.

Soil – Brown calcareous clay. Parcel size: 0.09 ha (2.22 acres). Situation: At the heart of a valley, North of Mercurey, Exposure: Total South. Average age of the vine: 35 years

Grape Variety – 100% Pinot Noir

Vatting – Temperature-controlled conical oak vats, Vatting time: 20 to 25 days

Ageing – In oak barrels 100%. Ageing time: 14 to 16 months, Proportion of new barrels: 20% to 35%

This Mercurey Premier Cru “Champs Martin” is fresh, fine and fragrant. Slightly oaked notes complement black fruit aromas on the nose, along with scents of violet, blueberry, blackberry and liquorice. Fleshy and velvety on the palate with flavours of strawberry and vanilla. Highly aromatic finish.

Food pairing – A fine accompaniment to red meats whether grilled, roasted or in red wine sauce, feathered game and mild cheeses.

Serve at 15°C. (59°F). This wine may be enjoyed when young to fully benefit from its fruitiness or it may be laid down for between 5 and 7 years.

Robert Parker Wine Advocate – 89 points

The 2016 Mercurey 1er Cru Champs Martin, Domaine Adélie, has a vivacious morello cherry and strawberry-scented bouquet that is a pure joy. The palate is well balanced with crunchy red berry fruit and fine acidity, maybe a little rustic, but this is just full of joie-de-vivre and you will finish a bottle far too quickly. Excellent.

Jancis Robinson – 16+/20

Sweet oak spice that is forthright and dominant on the palate. Furry tannin, bitter cranber-ry fruit and a very savoury finish.

James Suckling – 89 points

Bright, ripe red and blue fruits with a forest, brambly edge that leads to a palate with a sturdy, punchy core of tannins. The acidity is a feature here. Drink or hold for five to six years.
