Description

The Fournier family has been present in Marsannay since the 17th century, with writings from the reign of Louis XIII already attesting to the presence of a Fournier in the village.

It was much later, in 1962, that Jean Fournier settled as a winegrower in his native village. Today, his son, Laurent, is at the head of an exploitation which covers 22,5 hectares on the vineyards of the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune.

aurent Fournier, Jean’s son, has been a committed winemaker since his arrival at the estate in 2001.
He is at the origin of the Organic Agriculture labeling of the domain. In 2011, he was voted the Côte de Nuits’ young vigneron of the year; he has since dedicated much of his considerable energy campaigning to establish Premiers Crus in Marsannay, which is home to a number of his single-vineyard reds.
He invests himself every day in order to establish the reputation of Marsannay wines, to perpetuate a non-interventionist and environmentally friendly agriculture, and to promote minority grape varieties such as aligoté.

“Respect for the expression of the terroir, the vintage, the grape variety & the touch of the domain “.

Cultivar – 100% Pinot Noir

Age of vines – planted between 1950 and 2000

Ageing – in demi-muids (600L), of which 15% new, for 12 months, then 5 months in tanks

This classy cuvée has a floral and spice-accented bouquet. Blended from around the appellation, there’s 25% whole-bunch; élevage is in 500-litre barrels, one-quarter of which are new. The palate invites with juicy red fruit and supple tannins. Cooling acidity provides balance; it’s a very complete wine. It’ll drink well early but can be cellared with confidence. Drink 2021-2027.

Decanter – 92 points (2015)

Tasted by Andy Howard MWPart of Top-value red Burgundy: hidden gems in the Côte de Nuits
A Marsannay specialist, Laurent Fournier produces his Cuvée St-Urbain from a blend of village vineyards and younger vines. The 2015 has fine tannins, red berry notes and a leafy, lifted perfume. It’s elegant and finely honed – there’s a lot of pleasure to be found now, but good ageing potential too.
