The 11.5-ha domaine of Philippe Colin started in 2004 when Philippe and his brother Bruno partitioned the family Domaine Colin-Deléger.

His style is pure and elegant, with a true expression of terroir sites and limited new oak treatment, with increasingly larger format barrels that stock the cellar.

A producer with a foot in South Africa as he took over Topiary vineyard in Franschhoek in 2015.

100% Chardonnay

The vineyards cultivated for this village wine are planted in limestone and calcareous clay soils with a high clay content, situated just below the slopes of the premier cru vineyards of Chassagne. The vines range in age from 35-40 years old and are trained in the Single Guyot method. The vineyards are farmed sustainably, following la lutte raisonnée (the practice of using less chemicals, less often, less aggressively than conventional growers), with rigorous plowing and minimal use of chemical sprays.

Fifteen different parcels are combined in this cuvée, some from the Santenay side but most from Chassagne-Montrachet and the Puligny-Montrachet side. The latter two which comprise 65% of the final blend, were vinified and matured in barrel separately. All of the grapes were handpicked and gently pressed with the juice being run to stainless steel tanks, where it underwent natural fermentation. The wine was then moved to French oak barrels (25% new) for malolactic fermentation. It was aged in barrel for 11 months, with periodic lees stirring and then racked to tank where it was blended and rested for an additional few months before a light filtration, final blending and bottling.

This Chassagne-Montrachet is very linear with apple, quince and pear notes that are focused and refined. Beautifully structured, the bright acidity is balanced with a creamy, lingering finish.

This is a perfumed, citrusy expression of village-level Chassagne-Montrachet packed with pert, juicy green-apple and Meyer-lemon flavors. Philippe Colin exudes an air of quiet seriousness, and his style is pure and elegant, beautifully defined by site, eschewing any stylistic successes. New oak is only a modest presence, and it’s increasingly larger format barrels that stock this cellar. This tasting was very impressive indeed, and I encourage readers to seek out these wines. Clearly, the domaine flies somewhat under the radar when one considers the quality to be found in the bottle.

A paler colour with a light green tint. The bouquet is quite restrained. Some fresh apples on the palate, the thread of useful acidity which looks to be typical this year and notably more length on the palate. No more than middle weight but good energy. Three to five years.
