Description
Epicurean Wine originated from a collaboration between friends, corporate financier and entrepreneur Mutle Mogase, and politician Mbhazima ‘Sam’ Shilowa. Founded in 2001 with the first vintage released in 2003, Epicurean aims to produce luxury Bordeaux-style red blends that stand among the world’s finest.
The winemaking is overseen by the talented Schalk-Willem Joubert, known for his work at Rupert & Rothschild Vignerons. While Epicurean does not have its own vineyard, grapes are meticulously sourced from various prime locations in the Western Cape, including Stellenbosch, Durbanville, and Darling, to ensure optimal quality and expression of terroir. The wines are produced in the Rupert & Rothschild cellars.
Epicurean’s portfolio primarily focuses on red Bordeaux blends, typically featuring Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, and Petit Verdot. They are known for their elegant, complex, and age-worthy wines, with a philosophy centered on passion, precision, patience, and perfection in winemaking. The brand has gained recognition for its high-quality offerings and is considered a benchmark for luxury blends in South Africa.
Epicurean Chardonnay 2023 – 13.5 alc.
Chardonnay – 100%
Chardonnay source Elgin – 7 t/ha
Vinification details: Gentle whole bunch pressing, juice settled overnight, clean juice racked off and inoculated with yeast. 1/3 into fermentation, to French oak (300 L and foudre combination) for 10 months on primary lees. Roll barrels regularly to increase texture on the palate. 100 % of the volume goes into French oak.
Our focus on fruit purity of the elegant Elgin grapes has led us to using less new oak and this is evident in this wine. The wine did not go through malolactic fermentation so as to maintain minerality and freshness.
The wine is more in the Burgundian style with minerality, long in the mouth and complex.
Brings true joy to the Epicurean experience.
